A CLEAR VIEW. A SIMPLE NEXT STEP.

X-ray

Quick imaging to help guide the next step in care.

An X-ray, also called a radiograph, is a painless imaging test that uses a small dose of ionizing radiation to create pictures of structures inside the body. It helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

01

How to prepare

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown.
  • Remove metal objects that could affect the images, including jewelry, glasses, dentures, hairpins, hearing aids, removable dental work, underwire bras, and piercings, as instructed.
  • Tell the technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
02

During the exam

A technologist positions you carefully. You may be asked to remain still and briefly hold your breath to prevent blurred images. You will not feel the X-ray. Most exams take only a few minutes, although specialized studies may take longer.

03

Receiving your results

The computer generates images of the scanned area, which can be transferred to film or a CD. A radiologist interprets the images and sends a report to the requesting physician, who discusses the results with you and, when appropriate, your family.
