CROSS-SECTIONAL CLARITY

CT Scan

Detailed views of organs, bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues.

Computed tomography (CT) combines specialized X-ray technology with computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images. CT can examine the chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, and extremities to help evaluate injuries, internal conditions, and organ structures.

What to expect during your CT scan

You lie on a table that moves through a large, doughnut-shaped scanner. The machine rotates around you to capture images. The scan itself takes seconds; the full appointment may last 30–60 minutes. You may hear clicking or buzzing. Remain still while the technologist monitors you and communicates through a two-way intercom.

02

How to prepare

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and remove metal objects, including jewelry, glasses, and piercings.
  • Tell staff about allergies, medical conditions, medications, and any pacemaker.
  • Avoid eating or drinking if instructed, especially if contrast is used.
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
  • If you have a known contrast allergy, contact your physician before the exam.
03

Contrast material, if required

Some CT exams use contrast to enhance image clarity. It may be given through an IV or taken orally, depending on the study. Your physician determines whether contrast is needed.

04

Receiving your results

A board-certified radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to the physician who ordered your CT scan. Your physician discusses the results with you.
