A CLOSER LOOK AT BRAIN PATHWAYS

DTI Brain MRI

Advanced imaging.
A different view of the brain.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is a specialized MRI technique that measures how water moves through brain tissue. It can help visualize the organization of white matter pathways that connect different areas of the brain.

01

More information about white matter.

A conventional brain MRI shows the brain’s structure. DTI adds information about the direction and pattern of water movement within tissue. Specialized processing can use this information to estimate the course of white matter fiber pathways, a technique called tractography.

DTI complements other imaging and clinical information. It does not directly measure thoughts, memory, or how well the brain is functioning.

02

Chosen for a specific clinical question.

A specialist may consider DTI or tractography to help assess white matter pathways or support planning around a brain lesion. The appropriate exam depends on your medical history, symptoms, and the question your physician needs to answer.

DTI is also studied in traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions. It is not a stand-alone test that confirms or rules out a concussion. Your ordering physician determines whether it is appropriate for your care.

03

Prepare with your imaging team.

  • Tell the team about implants, a pacemaker, medical devices, prior surgery, or metal fragments before your appointment.
  • Let the team know if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, or if enclosed spaces make you uncomfortable.
  • Remove jewelry and other metal items as instructed. You may be asked to change into a gown.
  • Follow your center’s instructions about food, drinks, medications, and any contrast used for the complete MRI exam.
  • If sedation is planned, ask about fasting and arrange transportation according to your team’s instructions.
04

A familiar MRI experience.

You lie on a padded table with your head positioned in an imaging coil. The table moves into the MRI scanner. Remaining still is important for clear images, and you will receive hearing protection for the scanner’s tapping and knocking sounds.

A technologist monitors you and communicates with you during the exam. DTI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, without ionizing radiation. Appointment length depends on the complete MRI protocol; confirm the expected time when scheduling.

05

Images connected to your care.

A radiologist interprets the study and provides a report to your ordering physician. Your physician discusses the findings alongside your symptoms, examination, and other test results.

Ask your center when the report is expected and how your physician will receive it.

06

Common questions.

Is DTI the same as a standard brain MRI?

DTI is a specialized technique that can be included in a brain MRI protocol. It adds information about water diffusion and white matter organization.

Will I need contrast?

Contrast requirements depend on the complete exam ordered by your physician. The imaging team will confirm your protocol and preparation.
